How do I prepare for Prose/Poetry?
The first step is developing a "cutting." A cutting is a collection of works that have been previously published. Prose/Poeters must assemble a script which collects at least two hundred words each of previously published prose and poetry. The OHSSL is currently (as of the beginning of the 2009/2010 season) considering what constitutes "previously published"; however, speakers can find cutting material almost anywhere. Speakers have performed bits from theatrical scripts, film scripts, or literature of all types. They have drawn poetry from classic and contemporary writers. The options are open. Make sure to edit the cutting for time and content. The finding of suitable material can make or break a season. Take time finding the right cutting, one which excites you and addresses your strengths. Consult Ms. Shepard during this process.
What is a good theme for a prose/poetry performance?
No subject is forbidden, but prose/poeters often adopt themes connected to sentimental issues. They may deliver cuttings about love, relationships, abuse, or diversity. Anything goes, and you can impress judges with any theme. The ingenuity of the cutting and the polish of the performance rule the round.
How long does a prose/poetry performance last?
The maximum time is ten minutes with a thirty second grace period. In the early tournaments of the season, judges are lenient on speeches that run over. Later in the season, long speeches can result in low ranks. Tournaments require no minimum, but usually speeches run 8-10 minutes.
No. You may, but judges are told to make sure you read from your script, at least partially. Consider this similar to a symphony performance. Orchestra musicians have practiced their material, but they still refer to the sheet music in front of them.
What are the rules for original writing in the cutting?
You cannot add any of your own writing to the cutting, except in the introduction and transitions. An introduction is usually delivered after an attention-grabbing opening and transitions are delivered between separate pieces. Speakers must make sure to cite the title and author of each piece.
